Track 4b

Sustainable Architecture, Design & Infrastructure

Track Chairs

Dr Martina Maria Keitsch, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
David Jones, Deakin University

Goals and objectives

Sustainable design and architecture is the challenge to create new and ingenious surroundings. It works on various levels for example minimizing the negative environmental impact of products and buildings by enhancing efficiency and moderating the use of materials, energy, and space. Measures to relate form and plan of the design to the site, the region and the climate seem equally important. In order to establish a harmonious, long lasting relationship between the inhabitants and their sur-roundings, good formgiving is essential too - sustainable architecture shall be well built, easy to use and beautiful.

The goal of this track is to discuss key concepts, methods and applications in sustainable architec-ture, housing and construction and lessons learned by relating to the following issues:

Questions:

  • Existing methods and practices of green design and architecture. Are these sub-stantial and robust enough to meet the world wide SD challenge for the coming decades?
  • What are political, social and organizational conditions and boundaries for imple-menting sustainability in design and architecture?
  • How far do cultural circumstances influence existing approaches?
  • Are Western concepts and methods for sustainable design and architecture applica-ble in countries such as Asia, Africa and Southern America?

Topics:

  • Energy/ materials use, ‘cradle to cradle' thinking for buildings and products.
  • Recycling, waste utilization and renewable energy solutions
  • Nature as a model, biomimikry in architecture and design.
  • Human settlement including community developments, changing habitats and dwellings.
  • Cultural and societal challenges of sustainable architecture and design.

Outcomes:

  • Discussion of main concepts, methods and applications in sustainable architec-ture, housing and construction.
  • Mapping of opportunities of and challenges for sustainable development in archi-tecture and construction, in a scientific as well as in a socio-political context.
  • Contribute to the development of these domains scientifically and practically.
