Gendered Tipping Points

Track Chair

This panel invites papers that consider three 'tipping points' for transformative change in unequal gender relationships, each of which, we argue, is essential for sustainable development. Bodily integrity is the foundational tipping point, in which we envision societies where women can live free from all forms of gender based violence, and can exercise control over their bodies, sexuality and reproductive rights. The second tipping point we envision is a normative societal shift towards an ethics of care, where care labour (and those who provide it it) is recognized and valued. Social reproduction must become central to our understandings of sustainability. A redistributive politics of access to economic and political resources is the third tipping point: when women have equitable access to land, natural resources, credit, employment, welfare, decision-making power and other life-sustaining resources. Papers can respond to one or more of these thematic tipping points.
